This year, La Solitaire Bompard – Le Figaro single-handed, offshore race sees five female sailors competing.

It’s the first time in the history of the race that so many women are taking part and The Magenta Project is delighted that they will be acting as ambassadors to our mission of advancing women in the sport of professional sailing.

Sam Davies commented: “This marks a really positive shift in diversity in the fleet of Le Figaro. These women are top-level sailors and are an inspiration to many.

This is the second event of the Offshore Elite Solo Championships held in the Figaro Beneteau class. The event starts in Deauville, France on 19th July and consists of 4 legs including a stop in Cowes, UK, before finishing in La Rochelle.

The female competitors from varying nationalities are Justine Mettraux, Cecile Laguette, Mary Rook, Sophie Faguet and Claire Pruvot and have been nicknamed the Figarists.

Earlier today in Deauville’s Yacht Club The Magenta Project held a press conference to officially launch The Magenta Project in France and to profile the five Figarists, this was hosted by Sam Davies with the assistance of Anthony Marchand, Figaro competitor and former Volvo Ocean Race Sailor.

Sam Davies said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to launch The Magenta Project in France – I’m really keen to break through the language and culture barriers and bring the talent and experience here (in France) to our network.”

“Their participation in La Solitaire Bompard – Le Figaro proves that there are talented professional female sailors competing in the elite competitions. This is what The Magenta Project is all about – supporting, encouraging and providing pathways for women like these Figarists.”

Claire Pruvot commented, “supporting “The Magenta Project” is obvious to me. This is the most successful initiative to bring together women who sail at the highest level, and highlight the values we uphold every day through our personal projects. Through its colors, I hope to inspire other women to realize their dreams and to show that with ambition, everything is possible!”
