The Lamotte family have a new addition to their family, Tao who was born on May 25th, so Billy, aged 2, will now have to share the boat with a little brother. Tanguy has decided to devote himself to a family project abroad, probably in San Francisco. This project will be as ambitious as the sporting and solidarity project that has motivated him all these years. Tanguy, a naval architect, came into the world of offshore racing by designing and building his own boats – a profession he is returning to again.  This does not mean it is the end of the Initiatives-Cœur story. At the end of the Transat Jacques Vabre, Tanguy will hand over the helm of his new IMOCA to a trusted and talented sailor: Samantha Davies, who will compete in major ocean races, including the Vendée Globe 2020.

The Initiatives-Coeur project occupies an important place in Tanguy’s life and thanks to the special relationship they built during the last Transat Jacques Vabre he is pleased to hand over the helm to Sam Davies. In addition to her great sailing skills, Samantha has been adopted by the Initiatives-Coeur family. As co-skipper of the boat, she very quickly became co-ambassador of the cause, even accepting to attend the open-heart operation of one of the children saved thanks to the project. It was at this point that Tanguy knew he could pass on the baton to Sam whilst remaining closely attached himself to the 1 click=1 heart initiative.

Since 2004, Tanguy has sailed the flag of Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque on all the biggest oceanic races. His commitment enabled 127 children to be operated on, including 51 during the last Vendée Globe. He will start the Transat Jacques Vabre 2017 with Sam as co-skipper. He will then carefully follow all the developments of the project and will lend his support and valuable advice to the sailor. She will be surrounded by Tanguy’s current team up until the Vendée Globe 2020.

“I am handing over the helm, I am not leaving the boat. It is obviously a big piece of my life that I am leaving behind. But we have a great successor, and the wonderful stories will continue to be written with Sam.” Tanguy de Lamotte.

Finishing 4th in the Vendée Globe 2008-2009, skipper during the last Volvo Ocean Race, and an experienced Figaro racer, Sam is an excellent competitor, who also likes to share her passion with as many people as possible: her on-board videos made a lasting impression on the public during the Vendée Globe. Tanguy could not imagine a better person to succeed him at the helm of Initiatives-Coeur.

“It is the dream scenario to know right now that I will be starting the Vendée Globe 2020 with a high performance boat and excellent team that I am already aquatinted with. During the Transat Jacques Vabre 2015, I fell in love with the association Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque and the patron sponsors Initiatives and K.Line. Racing for children brings a deeper meaning to my profession as a sailor. It is an honour to take over from Tanguy but there’s also a lot of pressure for me to live up to what he has accomplished. I know he will not abandon me and will support me in this challenge.” Sam Davies.

Partners Initiatives and K-LINE want the project to continue and to be embodied by a skipper who is part of the large Initiatives-Coeur community. They feel both great friendship and gratitude towards Tanguy for his unwavering commitment and also welcome Sam’s arrival at the helm and as the flag bearer of the project with great enthusiasm. Sam won them over with her generosity and commitment during the Transat Jacques Vabre 2015. They maintain the same primary ambition: to save the greatest number of children while allowing Sam to reaffirm her sporting qualities on a competitive foiling boat.

“Initiatives and Alex Olivier have accompanied Tanguy since 2009, first in Class40, then in IMOCA on the Vendée Globe 2012. These were extraordinary adventures that still unite them today. Tanguy’s fighting spirit, his desire to share his passion for sailing in both good and bad times, is a wonderful quality that will be remembered and emulated by the collaborators, teachers, clients of initiatives and their students. The Initiatives-Cœur boat will continue to take on the oceans with Sam, a warm-hearted, skilled sailor willing to give it her all to save even more children. This is change in continuity.” Franck Vallée, Director of Initiatives.

“K-LINE feels an immense gratitude to and a deep affection for Tanguy. He has made a big impression on the world of offshore racing. He has designed a magnificent project that goes beyond sporting competition, since it also involves saving children. Tanguy has chosen a new path, but he has passed on the helm to another exceptional skipper, Sam, who’s become fully integrated in the project since the Transat Jacques Vabre 2015.” Bruno Léger, Managing Director of K-LINE.

Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque thanks Tanguy for all the work he has done for the cause and the children for almost 15 years and for having implemented a way to continue the project, allowing him to pursue his personal projects with the arrival of Sam Davies as a fantastic ambassador.

“Thank you Tanguy and well done for devoting yourself to your children after all you have done for the children of the world. Samantha has long been our beloved ‘skipheart’, so we are counting on her and the whole team to continue challenging the oceans to save the children.” Orso Chetochine, Director of Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque.

Today, more than 550,000 supporters are following the adventures of Initiatives-Coeur on Facebook, a fervour that the team did not expect when they first dreamt up the initiative “1 click = 1 heart” 5 years ago. A large and growing number of involved Internet users are actively supporting the solidarity project carried out so far by Tanguy. Sam is the first woman to announce her participation in the next Vendée Globe, and there is no doubt that they will have a warm welcome in store for her.
